Crash Course Notes

Today in class we touched base on the Crash Course video about philosophy. The 10 minute video took an hour because of discussion and and very interesting stories Mr. Schick told us. The philosophy video was very interesting and I learned a lot about philosophy. These are my notes on philosophy:


Philosophy Questions:

  • Why do you do what you do?
  • Why do you think what you think"
  • How do you feel what you feel?
Mythos- Storytelling
Philos- Science

Philosophia~ the love of wisdom (noun)
Philosophy~ the academic study of anything

Plato's Academy- first university in the western world
The Lyceum- Socrates' University

But Philosophy came to be understood more as a way about thinking about questions
What is the world like?
  • What is the nature of reality?
  • Is the world just matter and energy?
  • Or is anything else just going on?
  • Do I have a soul?
  • How should I love?
  • How should I treat a stranger?
  • Do I owe anything?

  1. Metaphysics- the branch of philosophy that studies nature and reality
  2. Epistemology- the branch of philosophy that studies the nature and scope of knowledge
  3. Value Theory

  • Ethics
          • Human Conduct
    • Aesthetics
        • Nature of beauty
    Logic about reasoning
    Fallacy- failed reasoning
