Crash Course Notes

Today in class we touched base on the Crash Course video about philosophy. The 10 minute video took an hour because of discussion and and very interesting stories Mr. Schick told us. The philosophy video was very interesting and I learned a lot about philosophy. These are my notes on philosophy: Philosophy Questions: Why do you do what you do? Why do you think what you think" How do you feel what you feel? Mythos - Storytelling Philos- Science Philosophia~  the love of wisdom (noun) Philosophy~ the academic study of anything Plato's Academy- first university in the western world The Lyceum-  Socrates' University But Philosophy came to be understood more as a way about thinking about questions What is the world like? What is the nature of reality? Is the world just matter and energy? Or is anything else just going on? Do I have a soul? How should I love? How should I treat a stranger? Do I owe anything? Metaphysics-  the branch ...

Just Another Monday

Today in class, we got our tests back. I got an A and I'm pretty proud. First test in Western Civilization. 2 of the questions I missed were just silly! I had my blog I could use and I messed up! I also took some wild guesses throughout the test but I got them right. We went through our test and checked what the answers were. We had to say the question with not even being allowed to say "um" or anything else like that. Knowing me, I was look at Mr. Schick when it was my turn and I said um an the consequence was that I got an eraser thrown at me. It was so funny and I was sort of nervous and I just could't say the question. Well I heard people in the back saying "It's not that hard, just say it." I don't even care what they were saying, I don't think I've ever laughed that hard in a class. After we looked over our tests we took some notes on philosophy. The person talking was from Crash Course. The brothers have a YouTube channel called vlogbro...

Test Day

We took a test in Western Civilization. I don't think it was bad. I studied and took some good notes. Then Mr. Schick told us we could use our blogs! Thats crazy! A teacher letting us use our computers on a test. I am surprised that no one searched up the answers. The map was easy and the short answers i didn't struggle that much on it. Some of the multiple choice was confusing, but I had to read over and over the question to get figure out the answer. I hope I do good on the test.  I don't know how but I got dropped down to a B! I mean I got all A's but that one project brought me down. ButI should've proof read more. Well it's only mid of the third quarter. I have the rest of the quarter to focus more and try to bring it up to an A. I have to do that for other classes also. Teachers must love cramming up work before the long weekend. This week has been a really interesting week. I had so many test and now I can FINALLY enjoy my long weekend. Welp. I gotta go b...

Review Day

Today in class, we reviewed for the upcoming first test of Western Civilization on Friday. I took good notes through out the unit and I think I am ready for this test. The test consists of 5 pages with 3 short answers. I asked a couple of questions and got the answers or some of which  I knew and was just double-checking. I review my notes everyday because of the blogs! I transcribe them onto my blog and it sticks in my head when I type it because I usually forget it after I just write it out quickly. This class feels like this is the best class I have taken notes in and the test is to prove on how good I did. From the first day of Western Civilization to now, we have actually learned a lot. I hate tests but this one may be interesting and I think I'm ready. Well this Friday is going to prove if I studied hard enough! (this is 165 words)

Pre-Review Day

Today in class, we got back our project grade. Since we all voted on the fact that we worked 20% each, we got the same grade, which was an 84. I thought we all did good, but didn't do enough to get that A. We got some good feedback on it and it can help us do better on the next one. Mr. Schick told us that we had a test coming up on Friday. Today is Tuesday, so I probably have enough time to study. The topic is on Classical Greece and the categories are Cultures of the Mountains/ Sea and Warring City- States. From the first unit I have had in Western Civilization, I have 9 pages of notes filled up front and back. Hopefully this is enough to provide me good knowledge about the test. Beside the announcement of the test and getting our grades back, today has been pretty laid back. Also for the test, I can go on to the main blog of the class, and look at that again and check over some things that I am still confused about. Greece has been really interesting and adapting to the new teac...

greece vS. PERSIA

Today we mainly focused on Persia vs. Greece in Western Civilization. The two were polar opposites and had major differences between each other. The notes I took today explained it. THE PHALANX close-rank, dense grouping of warriors armed with long spears and interlocking sheilds soldiers would slowly move up to the opponent until they broke through there ranks.  Persian Empire Insignificant Greece is so small PERSIA EMPIRE IS HUGEEEEEE huge army, unlimited resources fast beatdown Greek Army  regular people had the same weapons (iron weapons) Foot soldiers (hoplite) trained from early age home field advantage motivated to preserve democracy Persia Army fast archers do damage from a distance lightly armored infantry (sword, shield, bow) huge numbers far from home professional army  Timeline of Persian War highlights 564 BC: Persia conquer Greeks in Ionia 499-494 BC: Ionian revolt (Athens helps) Darius the Great def...

Warring City-States (somearry) < see what i did there!

Today Mr. Schick wasn't feeling so well so today during class, we took notes of of the textbook. We continued off of the slide which said "Warring City- States." This had a whole chapter about it. i learned a lot about city states. City state in Greek is "polis." Sparta and Athens were polis' in Greece and they were separated from the Peloponnesus. Athens focused on the naval side in the military and Sparta focused on land and were part of the infantry (fighting on land). Athenian education mainly studied what we focus on today. Some examples may be poetry, education, and gym- like practicing for the army. In Sparta, boys left at age 7 to dedicate their lives to the army. They would stop at age 30 but be officially done with it at age 60. That is if you didn't die as a martyr. The women in both polis' stayed home and did housework. The women got lucky if they knew how to read and write, so they taught their daughter, and showed them how to work aroun...

Direct Democracy + Gods and Goddesses

First day of Western Civilization today of the week. These are the notes I took today: Direct Democracy: Where the city-states are ruled by citizens Rule is based on citizenship  Majority rule decides vote    > in the agora, citizens argued, made speeches, then voted with white stones (yes) and black stones (no)  It was first practiced in Athens under Cleisthenes. around 500 BCE Gods and Goddesses  What is unique about the Greeks’ relationship with there gods is the interactions with humans Poseidon (god of sea) interferes with Odysseus trying to get home  Dionysus (god of wine) was son of Zeus (a god) and Semela (a human princess) Who’s who in the Pantheon Pantheon: gathering of gods Zeus- ruler of heaven and earth; father of Athena; god of sky, weather, thunder, lightning, law, order, and justice  Had a temper and was known to hurl thunderbolts ATHENA Goddess of wisdom, skill, warfsre (and peace), intelligenc...

Project Day 2 (the final day)

Image
Today is the day I've been waiting for since the beginning of the week. The week has been crazy. Tuesday felt like a Friday, Tuesday felt like a Wednesday and Wednesday was a lot of up and downs. Thursday just killed me. I was just thinking that can it just be Friday already. Friday was the best day. I don't know why I was so anxious for this day or just wanted to get the week over with. The work in Western Civilization is getting to the process of getting finished. As a group I think we did fairly well. I think I wrote a good amount. This is what I wrote:  Jobs in Greece depended on the ranking you were. If you were a politician, you were a higher class,  like an aristocrat. You got more money and fame, but most important, you had to be a male citizen. If you were a slave or working for someone, you were a lower class.  If you asked someone for money and didn’t pay them back, you could possibly be a slave and work for them in order to pay back the debt. The higher class ...

Project

So in class, we got into groups and started working on a project, which can or not be considered an essay. It is like a "5 point essay" in a sense that each group has a topic and write a paragraph about it. Our group, which involves Mert, Jacob, Logan, Dylan, and I. Our topic is Geography, Lifestyle, Jobs, and Culture. We have gotten decently far, and it is due soon so we will finish on time. Other groups got other topics that they chose. Mr. Schick wrote on each card a number, 1-5, and the number they chose, they had to write about the topic. We chose number 4. In order to get more points, we should add pictures. It is pretty boring to just read a paper with words that just goes on and on. A textbook seems interesting to read because it has pictures that can help you understand the topic that you are reading about. The jist of this blog is that we are doing a project, and  hope we get a good grade.
