greece vS. PERSIA

Today we mainly focused on Persia vs. Greece in Western Civilization. The two were polar opposites and had major differences between each other. The notes I took today explained it.

THE PHALANX
  • close-rank, dense grouping of warriors
  • armed with long spears and interlocking sheilds
  • soldiers would slowly move up to the opponent until they broke through there ranks.

Persian Empire
  • Insignificant Greece is so small
  • PERSIA EMPIRE IS HUGEEEEEE
    • huge army, unlimited resources
    • fast beatdown

Greek Army
  •  regular people had the same weapons (iron weapons)
  • Foot soldiers (hoplite) trained from early age
  • home field advantage
  • motivated to preserve democracy
Persia Army
  • fast archers do damage from a distance
  • lightly armored infantry (sword, shield, bow)
  • huge numbers
  • far from home
  • professional army

Timeline of Persian War highlights
  • 564 BC: Persia conquer Greeks in Ionia
  • 499-494 BC: Ionian revolt (Athens helps)
    • Darius the Great defeats the rebels and vows revenge on Athens
  • 490 BC: Persian fleet attacks Marathon, but loses
  • 480 BC: Xerxes (Darius' son) con-duels massive assault on Athens
  • 480 BC: Greeks, especially 300 Spartans, hold their own at Thermopylae
  • 480 BC: Greeks abandon Athens to fight Persia at sea, witting at straits of Salamis
  • Victorious Greeks from Delian League
